Started publication in January 1957, Academic Monthly. In March, 1958, under the leadership of Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, as an academic mass organization, Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations (SFOSSA) was established, for promoting and coordinating the citys social sciences studies and popularization as its main task, and Academic Monthly became its organ. The successive chairmen of SFOSSA are Chen Wangdao, Xia Zhengnong, Luo Zhufeng, Li Chuwen, Qin Shaode, and the present chairman is Wang Zhan, the present Leading Party Group secretary is Wang Weisong; the full-time deputy chairmen are Wang Weisong, Ren Xiaowen; the members of the Leading Party Group include Wang Weisong, Ren Xiaowen and Chen Linhui. During the Cultural Revolution period, SFOSSA stopped activity. In 1978, SFOSSA resumed its function, and Academic Monthly also resumed publication in January, 1979.

Academic Monthly has been highly valued and extensively supported by Chinese academia. Guo Moruo, a prestigious scholar, autographed his calligraphy for the title of this journal. In the process of its establishing and resuming, near a hundred predecessors, experts and scholars, such as Shen Zhiyuan, Wang Yafu, Shi Xiaochong, Xu Jie, Liu Fonian, Wu Chengxi, Wu Wenqi, Shang Ding, Zhou Gucheng, Zhou Yuanbing, Cao Weifeng, Cao Manzhi, Feng Qi, Liu Dajie, Shen Yinmo, Shu Shicheng, Song Yuanfang, Li Pingxin, Li Yanong, Luo Zhufeng, Zhou Yutong, Zhou Kang, Jin Zhonghua, Chen Wenbin, Chen Shoushi, Chen Yusun, Meng Xiancheng, Hu Quyuan, Tang Tao, Huang Yifeng, Shu Xincheng, Yang Kuan, Qi Qisheng, Cai Beihua, Wang Meizheng, Qiao Bin, Wu Ze, Wang Xuzhuang, Zhang Xunhua, Xu Zhongyu, Zhang Hengzhong, Fu Jizhong, Ding Zhenyan,

Ma Da, Wang Wei, Fang Zhong, Ma Feihai, Jiang Lan, Zhu Dongren, Sun Huairen, Shen Yixing, Chen Jingxuan, Li Zuochang, Li Peinan, Li Junmin, Li Chuwen, Lu Zhiren, Hang Wei, Jin Shunyao, Zheng Xinyong, Hu Shaoming, Zhong Wangyang, Shi Ping, Xia Yulong, Yao Nai, Xu Lun, Xu Panqiu, Shu Wen, Jiang Xuemo, Zeng Leshan, Lan Ying, Cai Shangsi, et al, have served as standing members or members of the editorial board. The successive editors-in-chief have been Zhou Yuanbing, Wang Yafu, Zhang Hengzhong, Huang Yingshu, Wang Bangzuo, Tian Weiping, and Jin Fulin. The present editor-in-chief is Jiang Youfu. Among them, Wang Yafu had been the editor-in-chief for a long time of 30 years, and made important contribution for the establishment, growing-up and development of Academic Monthly.

Since its establishment, Academic Monthly has always been guided by Marxism and its results of Chinese practical innovative theory, self-encouraged with an self-expectation of academic ethos of daring to be a path-finder in academic field, being able to contain various schools of learning, of honest and sincerity, and of transcending bearing. It takes as its own responsibility to thrive and develop Chinese philosophy and social sciences, to actively carry out the policy of letting a hundred flowers blossom, and a hundred schools of thought contend, to persist in taking root in academics, guarding thought, and going deep into the time as its direction, and to pay great attention to academic accumulation, heritage and to advocate theoretical rennovation, laying emphasis on reflecting our countrys development, academic frontier issues and vital academic achievements in the process of constructing socialist modernization. The manuscripts for publication covers the basic principles of humanities and social sciences, such as Marxist theory, philosophy, economics, literature, history, politics, law, and sociology, etc.

In 2003 and 2005 respectively, Academic Monthly won the second and the third Nomination Award for National Outstanding Journals issued by Press and Publication General Administration. In 2009, Academic Monthly was chosen as The Most Influential Journal in Past 60 Years of the Peoples Republic of China by China Association of Journals. In 2012, Academic Monthly was listed in the first batch of financially supported journals by National Philosophy and Social Sciences Planning Office; in 2013, 2015 and 2017, the title of national A Hundred Best Newspapers and Journals; in 2016, the title of A Hundred Best Chinese Journals Distribution Overseas; in 2018, the fourth Nomination Award for Journals Publication by Chinese Government; in 2021, the fifth Chinese Government Award of Publication for Journals. The journal has been chosen as East China Outstanding Journal for many times.

Academic Monthly is a stable source journal in Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI), and was listed in C100 Journal Catalogue (2018). In Peking Universitys Chinese Kernel Journals Principle Titles Collection (2020) , it was listed the third place in the part of Comprehensive Humanities and Social Sciences (journals of the institutions of higher learning included). In Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Chinese Humanity and Social Sciences Kernel Journals Principle Titles Collection (2018), Academic Monthly was chosen as an authoritative journal of comprehensive humanity and social sciences. In 2020, it was chosen by Wuhan University Chinese Science Review and Studies Center as RCCSE Chinese Authoritative Academic Journal (A+), and was listed at the first place for comprehensive journals of humanities.

From 2006 to 2020, Academic Monthly had 15 years in series ranged at the top of similar journals nationwide for its total number of theses reprinted or in digest form reprinted at the second-time important data transmitting platform, such as Xinhua Digest, Chinese Social Sciences Digest, Renmin University of China Newspapers and Journals Duplication Data, China University Academic Abstracts, etc. Moreover, in 2003, Academic Monthly initiated an event of choosing Ten Major Academic Focuses , co-sponsored with Wenhui Book Review at first, then with Guangming Daily Department of Theory and Renmin University of China Books and Newspapers Data Center in 2006 and 2011 respectively. The hitherto 18 times of successful holding have aroused extensive solicitude from the whole society, and enjoyed fame and influence in Chinese faculties of humanity and social sciences studies and the circle of academic publication.

1、周原冰,(1915-1995),男,原名周元斌,是我国著名的马克思主义伦理学家。生于1915年12月13日,安徽省天长县石染镇人。1934年4月加入共产主义青年团,开始走上革命道路。曾创办进步刊物《今天》《准备》,在上海从事抗日救亡活动。1939年10月加入中国共产党。翌年初,奉命到新四军第五支队工作。曾与十四团政治处主任胡少卿率部解放灵凤县侩南地区。在革命工作中曾担任苏皖边区政府行政干部学校秘书长等职。1956年10月22日,上海市哲学社会科学学术委员会筹备委员会举行会议,决定成立《学术月刊》编辑部,周原冰被任命为总编辑。1959年3月,因工作调动离开《学术月刊》编辑部。后曾任中共上海市委副秘书长、中共上海市委宣传部副部长,中国伦理学会副会长,上海伦理学会会长、《未定文稿》副主编、华东师范大学副校长兼教授。

2、王亚夫(1916-1999),男,广东揭阳县人。原名王俊豪,又名王仰三、王修文,笔名王突夫、佐征、魏风等。1936年冬参加华南抗日义勇军潮汕大队。1937年4月参加中国共产党。“七·七”事变后,发起成立汕头青年救亡同志会(後改为青年抗敌同志会),是初期领导人之一。1939年在梅县主编《民报》《妇女与儿童》《燎原》等报刊。1940年在揭阳主编中共潮梅特委机关报《新潮报》《通俗报》。后到粤北、广西从事教育和抗日活动。1943年到老挝、泰国。在曼谷组织中国民主同盟会暹罗支部,主编《民主新闻》。1948年在香港任中共华南分局机关报《正报》编辑,后回揭阳大北山游击根据地,任闽粤赣边纵队第二支队军政学校主任、中共潮汕地委宣传部副部长、《团结报》社社长、潮汕干校校长。1949年10月後任中共汕头市委宣传部部长、军管会文教接管部部长。1954年调赴越南创办《新越华报》,任社长。1956年回国任中央侨委办公厅秘书长。1958年3月,被任命为《学术月刊》副总编辑。1959年3月,被任命为总编辑,直到1966年7月《学术月刊》停刊。1978年10月,主持《学术月刊》复刊工作,再次担任总编辑。1987年离休。

3、章恒忠,男,1957年9月调入《学术月刊》编辑部担任经济学学科编辑。1980-1989年,担任《学术月刊》副总编辑、总编辑。1990年退休。

4、黄迎暑,男,1956年7月参与《学术月刊》的创办,担任文学学科编辑。1985-1992年,担任《学术月刊》副总编辑、常务副总编辑、总编辑。1993年退休。

5、王邦佐,男,1996年起任上海市社会科学界联合会党组书记、副主席、《学术月刊》杂志社社长兼总编辑。2003年起担任湖南大学政治与公共管理学院院长、名誉院长。

6、田卫平,男,2005年8月,作为上海市引进人才担任《学术月刊》总编辑。

7、金福林,男,2013-2017年任《学术月刊》常务副总编辑、总编辑。
