On Tao Menghe's Contribution to The New Youth——Important Details about the Division of The New Youth

Abstract: As for the research field about the division of The New Youth, scholars pay relatively little attention to Tao Menghe and often discuss Tao Menghe with Hu Shi together, and interpret and trace Tao Menghe's remarks before the differentiation based on the close relationship between Hu and Tao after the differentiation, which has not really comprehend Tao Menghe's spiritual stance and ideological core in the period of May Fourth. This dissertation focuses on the early relationship between Tao Menghe and The New Youth, especially the friendly communications with Chen Duxiu, and read the relevant context by reviewing the letters and articles which Tao Menghe wrote to Hu Shi and Chen Duxiu from 1919 to 1920. In the first half year of 1920, Tao Menghe and his wife actively contributed articles to The New Youth, which moved back to Shanghai; In August, Tao Menghe wrote to Hu Shi and Chen Duxiu, proposing to discuss with them to establish another daily newspaper based on the fan group of The New Youth. The disagreement between Chen Duxiu and Tao Menghe is related to the student movement of the Northern Normal university and the rumors of Yanjiuxi. These constructs new connotation for re-examining and interpreting the group differentiation of fans about The New Youth.
